If it’s not BOAK, don’t fix it!

4 tips Exterior Contracting Expert Sam Boak urges Homeowners to take when they start Spring Cleaning

Now that spring is officially here, the weather is finally starting to get nice again. This warm weather has homeowners taking a look at what projects need done around the house! Cleaning up your yard and landscaping when the weather warms up can be enjoyable for some and a chore for others. Here at Boak & Sons, we have two rules. Number one: Safety is Always First and number two: Never ever EVER cut a corner! We want to make sure your spring cleaning is done safely and effectively! That’s why contracting expert Sam Boak decided to share his top 4 ways to safely clean up your property this spring:

  1. Clear your yard of any debris.

While this can be a tedious task, it’s important. Debris such as stones, branches and twigs can damage your home’s siding, gutters and windows when you’re mowing or when your family is trying to enjoy your yard. These objects can also dull your lawn mower blades, so do a thorough combover of the yard before you start up the lawn mower.

  1. Make sure your gutters are clean.

Any contracting expert will tell you that clogged gutters can lead to a number of problems. They can be weighed down to the point where they start pulling away from your home, which can cause further damage to your roof, windows and siding. Plus, clogged gutters tend to overflow, and that leaking water can cause damage to your foundation!

  1. Trim any bushes, hedges or trees that are growing against the side of your home.

Trees and shrubs next to your house can be beautiful, but if they’re too close to your house your siding could pay the toll. If you have plants growing against the side of your home, the branches can put pressure on that siding which could eventually cause cracks. Leaves that are pressed up against the side and create shade also allow mold and rot to set in, which can also be harmful to your siding. Trim these plants down a bit so they are not touching the side of your home! It also might be a good idea to take a garden hose and spray your siding to get rid of any mold or dirt that has collected over the winter months.

  1. Check your siding and gutters for pest damage.

Take a look for any bird houses or signs of squirrel or other rodent infestations! These may include holes in your siding or nests in your gutters. While it’s important to handle these situations carefully, leaving them to wreak havoc on your home could cause major damage such as clogged gutters and cracks in your siding.

These are just a few ways homeowners can help protect their homes from damage while still getting outside to enjoy the sunshine as you’re getting ready for spring!
