Sam Boak Recommends his Top 4 Activities for this Summer Right in Our Own Backyard

It’s great to finally get to go do our favorite activities again! Rather than sharing information about Residential and Commercial Roofing, Insulation and Sheetmetal, Sam Boak wanted to talk about some fun activities you can enjoy right here in Northeast Ohio. Especially now that the weather has turned around, more and more of us are ready to spend time outside with our families to enjoy the summer. However, sometimes we run out of things to do! Sam Boak has lived in the Mahoning Valley for a long time, and he knows that there may be hidden treasures right here in our backyards that we don’t even know about. That’s why he wants to share some of his favorite summer activities so that his employees and customers, along with the rest of the community can enjoy them!

  1. Lanterman’s Mill

If you’ve lived in the Youngstown area for some time, you’ve definitely heard of Lanterman’s Mill. However, if you’re relatively new to the area, this is a great spot to take the kids for some beautiful sites, hiking and a little history. Lanterman’s Mill is one of Mahoning County’s most historic landmarks, built in 1845-1846 by German Lanterman and Samuel Kimberly. Today, you can visit the gift shop and hike the surrounding trails!

  1. The War Vet Museum

If the weather isn’t cooperating, the War Vet Museum in Canfield is a great option to get out of the house. The museum is a nonprofit organization that was founded by Lew and Joyce Speece in 1988. As a World War II Marine Veteran, Lew wanted to honor all who have served in our US military. The museum is now home to over 40,000 artifacts from the Revolutionary War to the modern-day War on Terror. The house itself is the oldest in Canfield and was built in 1809. While you’re there, take a look at the beautiful new siding on the building that Sam Boak and Boak & Sons replaced as our donation to help honor such an important foundation!

  1. Lil’ Paws Winery and Angels for Animals

If you’re looking for some adult fun with your furry friend, Lil’ Paws Winery is a great place to grab a delicious glass of homemade wine with a beautiful view. Located right on Lake Milton, this dog-friendly winery offers wine and beer, all named after their favorite dogs! Bring your pup and have a glass… or two! After you enjoy Lil’ Paws Winery you can enter your lil’ pup in the ANGELS for ANIMALS® 2021 Summer Calendar Contest! You may enter as often as you like up until September 7th. Click here for more details. While you are there check out the new Angel Wing addition. Sam Boak and Boak and Sons’ Commercial Roofing division had the pleasure of installing the new Snap Seam metal roof panels on the addition!

  1. The Arms Family Museum

Knowing your town’s history is important, and Youngstown’s history is rich! The best place to learn about it is the Arms Family Museum. This museum features artifacts displayed in their galleries which highlight the Historical Society’s collections of decorative arts, clothing, textiles and fine artwork. These galleries evolve and change to exhibit local landmarks from multiple time periods. They offer exhibits, tours and programs about the history of the Mahoning Valley and its people. If you’re looking for a good read, you can visit the newly remodeled Carriage House and Garage located behind the Arms Museum. Boak and Sons was honored to participate in the renovation of the house and garage, providing a new residential shingle roof and gutters!

The closed-stack library and reading room offers a wide range of regional archives, newspapers, and an extensive book collection. This is a great place to take the whole family to learn more about your local community!

Everyone needs a break from the everyday work life, even Sam Boak knows it’s not always about Commercial Roofing or Residential Siding, it’s about spending time with family. These are just a few places that he has enjoyed with his family over the years, but there is so much more to be found in the Mahoning Valley! If you have some favorite spots to visit, we’d love for you to share them with us on social media! Tag @boakandsons on Facebook to share your favorite summer activities.
