Sam Boak explains what Different Insulation Values Mean and why they Matter

Sam Boak is an expert on insulation and insulation values – it’s how Boak &
Sons got started! Over the years, Sam Boak has made a point to keep up with the
latest advances in technology and materials to make sure his customers are
constantly getting the best value and service. Part of this is helping to keep
our customers informed so they understand exactly what they’re paying for, so he’s explaining insulation values and what they mean.

How is an insulation rating measured?

Insulation rating is measured in R-value, which simply tells
you how well your insulation will perform by keeping your home’s temperature
regulated. Most higher R-value insulation materials do a better job maintaining
climate control in a home. However, lower R-value insulation materials can be
installed at different densities and thickness to create an air-tight barrier.

What do the numbers beside an R-value mean?

When you see a number beside the R-value, that’s telling you
the material’s resistance to conductive heat flow. R-values can vary from R13
all the way up to R60, and you can layer insulation materials to reach the
desired R-value your space needs.

How do you know what R-value is right for your home?

Sam Boak knows that these insulation values can change based on your
home’s needs, which is why he makes sure his employees stay educated in the
different insulation materials and can recommend the best fit for your home.
For example, your floors and crawlspaces might need a lower R-value such as R13
while your attic and walls could need R39 or higher depending on the space. Our
insulation professionals at Boak & Sons are trained to recognize what
materials work best in different areas of your home, and can walk you through
their recommendations! In addition to our own experience and expertise, we also
stay up-to-date with local building codes.
