Spring is here! Well, kind of. We might still have some chilly days to get through, but if you’re anything like the exterior contracting expert Sam Boak of Boak & Sons, you’ve probably started to take advantage of the nice weekends we’ve had to get a head start on some spring cleaning! Cleaning up your yard and landscaping when the weather warms up can be enjoyable for some and a chore for others. Either way, one of our two rules here at Boak & Sons is to never ever cut a corner. Sam Boak knows that this rule is something we all should carry through in our personal lives, not just the business!
It would be easy to cut corners while you’re cleaning up the outside of your home and be done with it much sooner. However, putting in a little extra effort can help ensure you don’t miss crucial steps to keep your home in good shape. Sam Boak wants to share the top 3 precautions he takes to ensure his home’s exterior is in tip-top shape this spring and summer.
- Clean up any debris in your yard before you mow.
This may seem tedious, but it’s incredibly important. If you have stones in your yard, mowing over them could actually turn them into projectiles which can damage your home’s siding, gutters and windows. Trust our exterior contracting experts – we’ve seen it happen! Stones and even some branches and twigs can also dull your lawn mower blades, so do a thorough combover of the yard before you start up the lawn mower (this is also a great way to get your kids out of the house too – you could even make a game out of it!).
- Don’t skip cleaning out your gutters!
We know gutter cleaning is a pain, but it’s so important! Clogged gutters can lead to a number of problems. They can be weighed down to the point where they start pulling away from your home, which can cause further damage to your roof and siding. Plus, clogged gutters tend to overflow and that leaking water can cause damage to your foundation!
- Protect your siding from branches and bushes.
Trees and shrubs next to your house can be beautiful, but if they’re too close to your house your siding could pay the toll. If you have plants growing against the side of your home, the branches can put pressure on that siding which could eventually cause cracks. Leaves that are pressed up against the side and create shade also allow mold and rot to set in, which can also be harmful to your siding. Trim these plants down a bit so they are not touching the side of your home! It also might be a good idea to take a garden hose and spray your siding to get rid of any mold or dirt that has collected over the winter months.
These are just a few ways homeowners can help protect their homes from damage while you’re getting it ready for spring!
